Sept.8, 2009 – “the Fear of the Lord”
September 8, 2009
There are a lot of different terms in the Word that give us trouble, or make us wrestle. Today in prov.8:13 is one of those phrases. We speak a lot, and with good reason, about the love of God. It is, who He is. Yet, we find the phrase “fear of the Lord” a lot in our bibles…more than you’d think! Yet, its always put in terms that are for our good.
Some have said that it is just ‘revererence’ for God. Or that it refers to the shaking response that we see some display to God’s holiness, like when the disciples quaked when Jesus calmed the storm in the gospels. Here in Prov.8:13 though, we get real down home advice on what it means, in a daily living sort of way, to live “in the fear of the Lord”
After reading this,
1. Why is it hard to fear the Lord in these kinds of circumstances?
2. Of the things listed here that wisdom ‘hates’, what among them is hardest for you to hate? Why?
3. Spend some time praying about what you may need to learn to hate, in order to be on the side of wisdom!
